I’ve been putting more of my thoughts into verse recently, specifically for singing, but I’m putting the words here as I write them.
This song started with me reading Romans 7: 24 “Wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death?” I put the first couple of lines into my notes app, where they lurked, and some time later added the rest. The last verse is inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:12 “Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
When Adam sinned he chose to walk away from a relationship with and the knowledge of God. All our wandering is a wilderness until we see that in Jesus we can have that relationship and knowledge restored to us.
I do like songs that start with our helplessness and end with God’s love and redemption. In the light of this, I call this: Our One Aspiration.
Wretched and hopeless
Sinners are we
Lost in our own selves
From Jesus we flee
Helpless to help us
We cannot succeed
To lift us to Jesus
For us to be freed
But God did us so love
To send us his Son
Come down to his children
That our souls might be won
He died to redeem us
To make us his own
He rose up to raise us
To his heavenly home
O worship the Saviour
Jesus our Lord
And trust in his promise
Set out in his Word
Our one aspiration
To know and be known
Our wondrous Redeemer
Our Lord, and our own
